How to handle noisy Housemates!
April 16th, 2009Stomping, slammed doors, loud music and televisions are top of the complaints when it comes to noisy housemates in your shared accomodation.
Excessive noise can be a real problem, causing lack of concentration, sleep and quality of life. A recent survey suggests that 1 in 3 of us have had to complain about a noisy neighbour or flatmate. So whether it’s loud DIY noise, thumping music or raging parties here are 5 tips to help you deal with noise pollution in your house share…
Talk face to face with your flatmate
Communication in a house share or flatshare is key. If someone has habits that are effecting or annoying you, you need to be able to voice them directly. Try to stay calm and not let emotion take over the conversation, just talk reasonably and state the facts.
Keep a record of noise
If the noise persists, start to keep a record of times and noise levels, it can be used to back up your claims if you need to talk to your housemate again or as a record if you need to speak to your Landlord/lady.
Write a note to your flatmate
If verbal communication hasn’t had the desired effect, try writing a note or letter. Again, keep it nice and avoid letting your emotions into it too much - state the facts!
Get another housemate to mediate
Having another person to bring in and talk through the problems can really help, not only will they listen to both sides, but if it’s another housemate, you may find you have someone to back up your claims!
Speak to the Landlord
If the problems persist and you have exhausted all other avenues, it’s time to talk directly to your Landlord or Landlady. It’s worth also checking your tenancy agreement and going through it with the Landlord to see if your house share has any clauses in it that prohibit loud noise after a certain time.
